HAKA Recycle Office content In light of the emerging global resource and energy crises, it is clear that architects and planners need to rethink the way in which they approach design assignments. In an intriguing case study, the HAKA building in Rotterdam, DSA developed an alternative resource efficiency strategy for a sustainable interior. Waste materials from demolition sites and production processes were harvested and reused to build the mixed-use interior. Built by a team of ex-detainees in a reintegration project, the pilot demonstrates that an interior project can create more than purely spatial value. The evaluation of the project indicates that besides the CO2 reduction booked by reusing materials, this approach offers an alternative financial model for development, with a strong social component. design The publication is printed on used paper, taking 20% of printing budget.
