Many schools have to contend with the tension between an inflexible building and constantly changing requirements for use. WiMBY! commissioned three designers to develop SchoolParasites, provisional structures, flexible in application and striking in design, as an attractive alternative to the usual trailer-type provisional classrooms. This book documents the designs. design The ‘basic WiMBY! pallet’ is implemented in this case as a user manual. Utilising drawings, situations are sketched in which it becomes clear why the temporary school extensions are necessary. The 'sample-card', made for the designed parasites, offers an overview of the functions that the parasites can serve. In this way, the parasites can easily be compared. A series of ground plans for the schools illustrate the change in use over time. In this manner, the historical transformation of the schools is clearly illustrated. A selection of pages is shown. Proeffabriek ![]() , 2002, architecture together with: Floor Houben occasion: item: logo and booklet content Because the number of people working for Shell is diminishing, the terrain can now be used differently. Modernisation and digitalisation make it a high-tech school campus with research and experimental possibilities feasible. This brochure features sketches for such a hypermodern education-machine. design In the booklet, the focus is laid on the diversity of connections between the city Hoogvliet and the Rotterdam harbour with industry complex. Definitions are explained utilising the ‘basic WIMBY! pallet’ and the future transformation of the industry is illustrated. The use of colour and form refer to the industry, as does the design for the Proeffabriek logo. SchoolParasites ![]() , 2002, architecture together with: Floor Houben occasion: item: logo, brochure/poster, ads, invitation and publication content Many schools have to contend with the tension between an inflexible building and constantly changing requirements for use. They need temporary classrooms and facilities, but not everyone is content with the existing supply of prefab units. WiMBY! commissioned three designers to develop SchoolParasites, provisional structures, flexible in application and striking in design, as an attractive alternative to the usual trailer-type provisional classrooms. design The ‘basic WiMBY! pallet’ i s used in this instance as a user manual. Sketches are made to communicate the necessity for temporary classrooms for the schools. For the cover, an archetypal temporary classroom is contrasted with the three new 'Parasites'. These four basic forms are brought together in the form of a childrens wooden block box. For each parasite, a matrix of functions is made providing an overview as well as making them easily comparable. Hoogvliet Domain ![]() , 2002, architecture together with: Floor Houben occasion: item: logo, two brochures, posters and several flyers for the 'Heerlijkheid Festival' [Heerlijkheid Hoogvliet] content: The project 'Heerlijkheid Hoogvliet' is a design for a summer village in the northern edge of Hoogvliet. A number of large scale services that are missing in Hoogvliet are brought together in this summer village that functions as a festival terrain, with a constantly changing look and atmosphere. The London based architectural office FAT designed the park and it’s furniture, as well as the villa. design For the brochure, the ground form of the villa model is photographed and filled with 'pop-up' elements from the ‘basic WiMBY! pallet’. In this way, the intended flexible in-fill of the Heerlijkheid by the inhabitants is accentuated. Alongside this, the playful elements used in the design and the logo radiates the festive character one would associate with a summer village.
